Nike SB 'Gizmo'

May 2019 by Route One

Nobody can deny the immense leaps and bound the women's skate scene has come on over the past decade. Though fearless females have been riding skateboards since surfers first looked to the concrete for their carving fix on calm water days, the last ten years have seen a seismic shift in not only the way the industry has acknowledged the vital contribution women skateboarders are making, but also the perceptions of young girls out there, realising that skateboarding, if they want it, is just as much for them as it is their brother, their father or their friend.

Nike SB lends its financial support to women's skateboarding in numbers previously unheard of in our industry and it's fully deserving that their latest full length piece, inspired by the journey of the one and only Elissa Steamer, is currently receiving the hype and praise it is.

"In 1996, Elissa Steamer pushed her way into skateboarding’s spotlight with a stand-out style that transcended gender and commanded respect. Through video and grassroots touring, Elissa, whose nickname “GIZMO” her father bestowed upon her, became a favorite to many, inspiring generations of skateboarders for years to come. Proof that progression in skateboarding is more than just tricks. Nike SB proudly presents GIZMO, our first all-women’s skate video and homage to Elissa and testament of what’s to come. Featuring Lacey Baker, Leticia Bufoni, Hayley Wilson, Sarah Meurle, Josie Millard, Nicole Hause, Aori Nishimura, Rayssa Leal and Elissa Steamer. Directed by Jason Hernandez with assistance from Tyler Smolinski, GIZMO is dedicated to those breaking open new lanes."
